Polish Opposition Holds Massive Rally Ahead of Election

Hundreds of thousands of people participated in the “March of a Million Hearts” opposition rally in Warsaw, two weeks ahead of a crucial election, Reuters reports.

Warsaw city authorities estimated about a million attendees, while some sources suggested between 600,000 and 800,000.

The nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) government leads in opinion polls but may struggle to secure a majority due to concerns over rising living costs and erosion of democratic checks.

The Civic Platform (PO), a liberal party, argues that this election will determine Poland’s future in the EU and its democratic status.

PO leader Donald Tusk, a former European Council president, has suggested that PiS might aim to lead Poland out of the EU, a claim PiS denies.

PiS has been in power since 2015, campaigning on anti-migrant policies and support for families and the elderly.
