Australia has recorded its warmest winter ever since records began in 1910, according to the Bureau of Meteorology, Reuters reports.
The Bureau of Meteorology recorded a mean temperature of 1.53 degrees Celsius above the 1961 to 1990 average.
Winter rainfall across the country was 4.2% below the 1961 to 1990 average, except in some northern regions.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued an El Nino alert, with a 70% chance that the weather pattern will develop between September and November.
El Nino is associated with extreme weather phenomena, including wildfires, tropical cyclones, and prolonged droughts.
