A group of army officers have launched a coup and seized power in Gabon, placing President Ali Bongo under house arrest, AP News reports.
The coup leaders plan to dissolve the country’s institutions and claim the president’s “unpredictable, irresponsible governance” risked chaos.
The incident comes shortly after Bongo was declared the winner in the country’s disputed election, extending his family’s 55-year rule.
