China has suspended the import of seafood from Japan following Japan’s decision to release treated radioactive water into the ocean, CNBC reports.
Japan plans to release approximately 1.3 million metric tons of treated wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear power plant.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Japan assert that the release will have a “negligible” impact on people and the environment.
China is Japan’s largest importer of seafood, bringing in 71.7 billion yen ($493.4 million) of fish and 53.56 billion yen of crustaceans in 2022.
China’s suspension of seafood imports from Japan is due to its concerns over potential radioactive contamination and food safety.
