The African Union (AU) has suspended Niger from all AU activities in response to the recent military coup, Reuters reports.
The AU has urged its member states to avoid any actions that might legitimize the coup leaders.
The AU has also called for the immediate release of President Mohamed Bazoum, who has been detained since the coup.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is attempting diplomatic negotiations with the junta but is prepared to deploy troops if necessary.
The coup leaders proposed a three-year timeline to organize elections, but the proposal was rejected by ECOWAS.
