The Group of 20 (G20) has officially invited the African Union (AU) to become a permanent member at the G20 summit in India, AP News reports.
This move comes seven years after the AU advocated for full membership and signifies Africa’s growing influence on the global stage.
The AU represents 55 member states and the continent is home to 1.3 billion people, a quarter of the planet’s population, which is set to double by 2050.
Africa possesses 60% of the world’s renewable energy assets and over 30% of minerals essential for renewable and low-carbon technologies.
