Russia’s Luna-25 spacecraft has crashed into the moon after it spun into an unpredictable orbit, AP News reports.
The country’s space agency Roscosmos said it had lost contact with the spacecraft on Saturday when it reported an “abnormal situation.”
The spacecraft then moved into an unpredictable orbit before colliding with the surface of the moon, according to Roscosmos.
The spacecraft was on a mission to the moon’s south pole believed to contain reserves of frozen water and precious elements.
Russia was in a race with an Indian spacecraft launched on July 14 to be the first to reach the south pole.
