India is expected to overtake China as the world’s most populous country by the middle of this year, according to the United Nations, Reuters reports.
India’s population is estimated to reach 1.4286 billion people and surpass China’s 1.457 billion with a difference of 2.9 million.
China’s population growth has stalled due to the country’s one-child policy, which was introduced in the 1980s and scrapped in 2016.
Last year, China’s population shrank for the first time since the 1960s.
