The UK has fined TikTok £12.7 million for illegally processing the data of 1.4 million children under the age of 13 without parental consent, reports The Guardian.
Britain’s Information Commisioner’s Office (ICO) accuses TikTok of not taking adequate steps to enforce its age restriction on users under the age of 13.
As of 2020, TikTok stored the data of an estimated “1.4 million UK children” without the guardian’s consent, according to the ICO.
“While we disagree with the ICO’s decision, which relates to May 2018 to July 2020, we are pleased that the fine announced today has been reduced to under half the amount proposed last year. We will continue to review the decision and are considering next steps.”
