World Bank Estimates Earthquakes Caused Turkey $34bn in Damages

The earthquakes that hit Turkey and Syria have caused destruction worth $34bn of damages in Turkey alone, according to the World Bank reports the Financial Times.

The overall damage corresponds to around 4% of Turkey’s 2021 GDP, but the World Bank expects the overall costs to be higher due to rising material and labour costs.

The figure does not include the destruction in neighboring Syria, nor the costs of rebuilding destroyed buildings and infrastructure.
