Peru’s new government has declared a 30-day national state of emergency in an attempt to quell protests following last week’s arrest of President Pedro Castillo.
“With this measure, we seek to guarantee order, the continuity of economic activities and the protection of millions of families.”
– Luis Otárola, Defense Minister of Peru
Last week, Castillo was impeached and arrested after attempting to dissolve the congress, he was replaced by vice-president Dina Boluarte.
Since then, Peru has experienced deadly protests calling for the reinstatement of Castillo, with at least eight killed in clashes with the police.
On Wednesday, the new government declared a state of emergency, suspending the right to gather and limiting freedom of movement.
