On Wednesday, Peru swore in Dina Boluarte, the country’s first female president, after former President Pedro Castillo was impeached following an attempt to dissolve the parliament.
On Wednesday, Castillo declared a state of emergency on national television in an effort to dissolve Congress and install an “exceptional emergency government”.
The Congress, controlled by opposition parties and about to launch fresh impeachment proceedings against him, convened an emergency session and held an impeachment vote.
The president was impeached after 101 voted in favour, six against and 10 abstained. Castillo was then arrested and detained, accused of coup d’état.
Vice-president Boluarte, 60, was then sworn in and will govern until July 2026, which would have been the end of Castillo’s term.
