Comedian Kathy Griffin appears to be the first celebrity to be suspended from Twitter after Impersonating the platform’s new owner, Elon Musk.
Over the weekend, a number of prominent users impersonated Musk in an effort to show the flaws in the platform’s revised verification system.
Twitter Blue
Musk has launched Twitter Blue, a subscription plan which gives users the blue check mark on their profiles for $8 a month.
It was previously used as a verification system of celebrities, politicians, journalists and other public figures, in order to prevent impersonations.
Over the weekend, celebrities on the platform has posed as Musk, complete with a blue check mark and tweeting nonsense in defiance.
“Going forward, any Twitter handles engaging in impersonation without clearly specifying ‘parody’ will be permanently suspended.”
– Elon Musk, CEO of Twitter, November 6, 2022
In response to the backlash, Musk said Twitter users will no longer receive warnings before suspension, and that a name change will “cause temporary loss of verified checkmark”.
