On Wednesday, the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly condemned Russia’s illegal annexation of four partially occupied regions in Ukraine.
143 countries out of the 193-member General Assembly voted in favor of the resolution that reaffirms the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
Russia and the four countries of Syria, Nicaragua, North Korea and Belarus voted against the resolution.
35 countries abstained from the vote, including China and India, while the rest did not vote.
“Today it is Russia invading Ukraine. But tomorrow it could be another nation whose territory is violated. It could be you. You could be next. What would you expect from this chamber?”
– Linda Thomas-Greenfield, US Ambassador to the United Nations
In 2014, following Russia’s annexation of Crimea, the General Assembly declared the referendum invalid with 100 votes in favor, 11 against and 58 abstained.
