On Friday, a United Nations commission discovered evidence of executions, torture and sexual violence in four areas formerly under Russian occupation.
"Based on the evidence gathered by the Commission, it has concluded that war crimes have been committed in Ukraine."
- The Commission of Inquiry Chief, UN Human Rights Council.
In May, a commission was set up to investigate allegations of war crimes. They have so far focused on four regions: Kyiv, Kharkiv, Sumy and Chernihiv.
The UN investigators spoke with over 150 victims and witnesses and visited 27 settlements, investigating graves as well as detention and torture facilities.
Commission chairman Erik Mose said they found evidence of an unspecified number of sexual or gender-based violence on victims' ages ranged from 4 to 82 years old.
"We were struck by the large number of executions in the areas that we visited. The commission is currently investigating such deaths in 16 towns and settlements."
- Erik Mose, Commission's Chairman.
When asked if there had been crimes against humanity, Mose said that the committee had not yet come to that conclusion.
