Boris Johnson to Resign as Tory Leader, but Push to Remain as Prime Minister Until Autumn

Boris Johnson will resign as Conservative leader but will push to remain as prime minister until autumn, drawing backlash from those who wants him to step down immediately.
The decision came after a standoff with his cabinet, which came to an end after Johnson was urged to resign by his new chancellor, Nadhim Zahawi.

At that point, more than 50 ministers had quit, citing his unethical behavior and his mishandling of a string of scandals.

Labour leader Keir Starmer has declared that his party would initiate a vote of no confidence in the House of Commons, if Johnson refuses to go sooner.
"He needs to go: he can't cling on in this way. His own party have now decided that he's unfit to be prime minister. If they don't get rid of him, then Labour will step up, in the national interest, and bring a vote of no confidence because we can't go on with this prime minister clinging on for months and months to come."

Johnson's resignation begins the competition to select a successor, with front runners including Zahawi, Rishi Sunak, Sajid Javid, Penny Mordaunt, Ben Wallace, Jeremy Hunt and Liz Truss.
