Canada becomes the first Western nation to enact legislation allowing for the seizure of sanctioned assets belonging to Russia for Ukraine's reconstruction.
On April 28, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Chrystia Freeland, declared Canada's intention to pursue the seizure-of-assets.
On June 23, the Senate of Canada passed the relevant amendments to the Special Economic Measures Act.
Seized funds may be used for:
- The reconstruction of the foreign state adversely affected by a grave breach of international peace and security.
- The restoration of international peace and security.
- To compensate victims when that security is breached and their rights are violated.
