An Italian man who was crippled in a car accident 12 years ago, became Italy's first case of assisted suicide.
Federico Carboni, 44, self-administered the letahl medications using a specially made machine, passing away with his family by his side.
"I did everything I could to live as best as I could and try to make the most of my disability, but I am now at the end of my tether, both mentally and physically,"
- Federico Carboni
In 2019, Italy's Constitutional Court allowed assisted suicide, after fierce resistance from conservative parties and the Roman Catholic Church.
However, local health authorities are required to review and approve each request. Some patients have accused the authorities of purposefully taking their time.
Last November, Carboni finally obtained permission after winning two legal battles and overturning an earlier refusal by health officials.
