Nearly 1,000 Casualties After Earthquake Hits Afghanistan

On Wednesday, Afghanistan was hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The death toll has risen to 920, with more than 600 injured. It is an early estimate as some villages are in remote areas in the mountains.
The epicenter of the tremor was 46km (27 miles) away from the city of Khost, near the border of Pakistan.

People in the Afghan capital Kabul felt the aftershocks, 200 kilometers (124 miles) away, according to Afghan journalist Ali M. Latifi.

Neighboring nations of Iran and Pakistan, also experienced tremors.
However, there has been no reports of injuries or damage.
Afghanistan have long been vulnerable to earthquakes, due to the Indian tectonic plate colliding with the Eurasian plate to the north.
