First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon to launch a fresh campaign for Scottish independence.
She intended to have a vote on "Independence Referendum 2" (Indyref2) by the end of the next year.
"The conclusion very clearly is that Scotland could be doing much better as an independent country… Nobody right now can look at the UK - the mess it's in currently and its prospects for the UK outside of the European Union surely and conclude anything other than that Scotland can do better as an independent country."
- Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister of Scotland
Prime Minister Boris Johnson rejects the proposal, stating "now is not the time" for another independence campaign.
He said the UK should focus on the cost-of-living crisis and the ongoing impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
"Had we known in 2014 everything we know now about the path the UK would have taken then, I've got no doubt Scotland would have voted yes back then."
- Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister of Scotland
The first referendum on Scottish independence took place in 2014, when the pro-UK side won by 55% to 45%.
Scotland voted overwhelmingly against Brexit during the 2016 referendum, with 62% to 38%.
