Tech firms may soon be forced by the EU to police manipulative accounts on their platforms.
This includes deepfakes, images and videos that have been altered using software and fake accounts.
The regulatory code will be co-regulated, both regulators and signatories to the code will share accountability.
Companies listed as signatories on the code, include Facebook (now called Meta), Google, Twitter, and TikTok.
Companies that fail to comply may face fines of up to 6% of global turnover.
For large companies like Meta and Google, which had annual revenues of $118 billion and $258 billion respectively in 2021, that would result in multi-billion dollar fines.
