Priceless Jewelry Stolen from Louvre Museum in Paris

  • On Sunday morning, thieves executed a seven-minute robbery at the Louvre Museum in Paris, targeting the Galerie d’Apollon, which houses the French crown jewels.
  • The perpetrators used a basket lift to access an upper-floor window, they cut through window panes, smashed two high-security display cases, and escaped on motorbikes.
  • Eight priceless objects were stolen, including an emerald-and-diamond necklace of Empress Marie-Louise, emerald-set crown and diadem of Empress Eugénie, and other 19th-century imperial pieces. The emerald-set crown of Empress Eugénie was later recovered, broken outside the museum.
  • French authorities reported four suspects, two on the lift and two on scooters, dressed partly as construction workers. The thieves were unarmed but carried tools to breach the display cases.
  • The museum closed for the day to allow a forensic investigation.
