Minnesota authorities arrested Vance Boelter on Sunday after a two-day manhunt for the killing of former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, and the shooting of State Senator John Hoffman and his wife.
Boelter allegedly posed as a police officer and carried out the attacks early Saturday, first shooting Hoffmans in their Champlin home before driving several miles to Brooklyn Park, where he fatally shot the Hortmans. Boelter, who fled on foot into nearby woods, was later found by police officers near his home and surrendered after evading capture for nearly 48 hours. Authorities found a vehicle disguised as a police SUV near the crime scenes containing a list of names that included Minnesota Democratic lawmakers, abortion rights advocates, and healthcare workers.
Senator Hoffman remains hospitalized after being hit by nine bullets, while his wife Yvette also sustained multiple injuries. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz called the shootings a “politically motivated assassination” that has deeply shaken the state and raised concerns over rising political violence in the U.S.
