U.S. President Donald Trump has deployed 700 Marines and an additional 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles in response to protests against recent immigration raids. The raids, targeting undocumented workers, have triggered widespread demonstrations, marked by clashes between protesters and law enforcement.
California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass strongly oppose the deployment, criticizing it as an unprecedented and politically motivated show of force that risks public safety and state sovereignty. California’s Attorney General Rob Bonta filed a lawsuit against the deployment, arguing it violates federal law requiring a governor’s consent and infringes on the state’s authority. Police Chief Jim McDonnell argues the military presence is unnecessary and complicates law enforcement efforts.
The Trump administration defends the crackdown as necessary to enforce immigration laws, with Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem vowing to double the number of daily raids. Trump accused state and local leaders of obstructing federal law, even suggesting that Governor Newsom should be arrested for refusing to cooperate with federal immigration policies.
