Los Angeles has seen escalating unrest in recent days after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents conducted raids across the city, arresting over 100 immigrants. The operations, targeting undocumented migrants, sparked fierce opposition from local communities, many of whom view the raids as a direct attack on the city’s large Latino and immigrant population.
Protesters blocked freeways, set vehicles on fire, and clashed with law enforcement using fireworks, concrete, and barricades. Police and federal agents responded with tear gas, flash-bang grenades, and rubber bullets. At least four self-driving cars were torched, and dozens of protesters were detained.
U.S. President Donald Trump deployed 2,000 National Guard troops to the city in response to the protests, without California Governor Gavin Newsom’s consent. Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass condemned the move, calling it an unnecessary provocation aimed at creating a spectacle rather than ensuring public safety.
