Billionaire Elon Musk has criticized U.S. President Donald Trump’s major tax and spending bill, calling it a “disgusting abomination” that would drastically increase the federal deficit and burden Americans with unsustainable debt, deepening divisions within the Republican Party.
The legislation, dubbed the “Big Beautiful Bill,” extends Trump’s 2017 tax cuts while adding substantial funding for border security, military buildup, and national security initiatives. The bill proposes cuts to social programs, including Medicaid, food aid, and green energy investments, to offset some of the cost. It passed the House narrowly and faces resistance in the Senate.
Musk, who recently stepped down from a government advisory role, warned the bill would drive the deficit to unsustainable levels and cut vital subsidies for electric vehicles. Despite backing Trump’s campaign with hundreds of millions in donations, Musk now urges voters to reject lawmakers who support the plan. Republican leaders dismissed Musk’s concerns, but several fiscally conservative Republican senators echoed his alarm over spending and deficits.
