11 people were killed and over 20 injured when an SUV drove into a crowd at a Filipino culture festival in Vancouver, Canada. The attack, which occurred at the Lapu Lapu Day Festival in the city’s Sunset neighborhood, has been described by local officials as “the darkest day in Vancouver’s history.”
Police confirmed that the attack involved a single vehicle, a black Audi SUV, which plowed into people gathered along the street after a concert. The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Kai-Ji Adam Lo, was arrested at the scene after being subdued by bystanders. Authorities said Lo has a long history of mental health issues and have ruled out terrorism as a motive. He faces eight counts of second-degree murder, with more charges expected.
The attack has drawn condolences from various political leaders, including Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney, who offered his sympathies to the Filipino-Canadian community, and the Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who expressed his sorrow over the loss of life.
