More than 100 presidents from U.S. universities and colleges, including Harvard, Princeton, and Brown, have signed a joint statement denouncing the Trump administration’s “unprecedented government overreach” into higher education.
The statement comes after the Trump administration pushed for influence over faculty hiring, curriculum decisions, and student admissions. The administration defends its actions as an effort to combat antisemitism and monitor foreign students, especially in the wake of pro-Palestinian protests. However, critics argue these concerns are being used to dismantle diversity programs and exert ideological control over campuses.
Harvard University has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration after officials froze $2.3 billion in federal funding and demanded unprecedented control over the university’s operations. Meanwhile, Columbia University has complied with the administration’s requirements to restore funding.
