U.S. President Donald Trump has granted tariff exemptions to smartphones, computers, semiconductors, and other electronics from his recently announced 145% reciprocal tariffs on Chinese imports, providing immediate relief to major U.S. tech firms like Apple, Nvidia, and Dell.
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection outlined over 20 product categories, including laptops, flat-panel displays, and flash drives, from both the China-specific tariffs and the 10% baseline tariff on imports from other countries like India and Taiwan. Industry analysts praised the decision, calling it a “game changer,” particularly for Apple, which faced potential iPhone price hikes of up to $3,500.
The Trump administration insists that the exemptions are temporary and emphasizes that tech companies are still expected to shift production to the U.S. Trump has cited national security and supply chain independence as driving factors, reiterating his long-term goal to reduce reliance on China for critical technologies.
