China Imposes 84% Retaliatory Tariffs on US Goods as Trade War Escalates

China has announced sweeping retaliatory measures against the United States, raising tariffs on American goods from 34% to 84%, effective April 10, 2025. The move comes in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to raise total tariffs on Chinese imports to 104%.

China has criticized the U.S.’s actions as “a mistake on top of a mistake,” arguing that they infringe on China’s legitimate rights and disrupt the global trading system. Beijing highlighted that the U.S. has miscalculated the trade balance by focusing only on physical goods and ignoring trade in services, where China has a $26.57 billion deficit with the U.S. as of 2023.

China has shown no interest in resuming talks under the current circumstances. The government pointed out that the U.S. has violated commitments made during the Phase 1 trade deal, including the ban on TikTok and demands for forced technology transfers. Beijing insists that any future negotiations must be based on equality and mutual respect.
