Rubio stressed that while the U.S. is fully supportive of NATO, its military engagement in Europe cannot continue at the same levels without greater financial commitment from European nations. He emphasized that NATO can only grow stronger if its members invest more in their own defense. Rubio also acknowledged that achieving the 5% target would take time but insisted that a realistic plan must be in place.
Rubio’s comments come amid ongoing concerns in Europe about the U.S.’s long-term commitment to European security and the potential for a reduction in U.S. military presence in Europe. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte confirmed that no immediate U.S. troop withdrawals are planned, but some members are anticipating a gradual drawdown.
