A devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, killing at least 1,644 people and injuring over 3,400, according to Myanmar’s military government. The quake was followed by multiple aftershocks, including one of 6.7 magnitude, causing further devastation.
The epicenter was near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, causing widespread destruction to key infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and airports. Major airports in Naypyidaw and Mandalay have been shut down due to damage, further complicating relief efforts.
Myanmar’s military government has called for international aid, with China, Russia, India, and South Korea having pledged support and dispatched rescue teams. However, efforts remain hindered by the ongoing civil war, with reports of continued airstrikes by Myanmar’s military even after the disaster.
