U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated his interest in acquiring Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, in his address to Congress. He highlighted Greenland’s strategic location and its importance for U.S. military defense and global security, as well as its vast resources, promising to bring prosperity and security to the island.
Despite Denmark’s firm stance that Greenland is not for sale, Trump suggested that the U.S. was actively working toward acquiring Greenland “one way or the other.” Opinion polls indicate that most Greenlanders oppose joining the U.S., but many favor eventual independence from Denmark. The issue has sparked discussions within Greenland’s independence movement, though the ruling party has cautioned against rushing the independence process.
