France’s Macron Meets Donald Trump in Washington

U.S. President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron revealed differing approaches to the Ukraine conflict during their meeting, highlighting a growing divide between the U.S. and Europe. Trump pushed for a swift ceasefire with Russia, while Macron advocated for a more cautious approach with security guarantees.

Trump avoided calling Russian President Vladimir Putin a dictator, unlike his previous remarks labeling Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky a dictator. Meanwhile, Macron firmly stated that Russia was the aggressor. Both leaders agreed on deploying European peacekeeping forces once a peace deal is reached, but they would not be involved in active conflict.

Trump also discussed a minerals revenue-sharing agreement with Ukraine to recoup U.S. military aid, a deal Zelensky has so far rejected. When asked if Ukraine might have to cede territory to Russia, Trump responded, “We’re going to see,” while Macron insisted on Ukraine’s sovereignty.

The meeting comes amid growing concerns from European allies over Trump’s stance on Ukraine. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is set to visit Trump later in the week to discuss these issues.
