The United States and Russia held talks in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Tuesday, agreeing to move forward with efforts to end the war in Ukraine. Both sides decided to appoint high-level teams to work towards a sustainable and mutually acceptable resolution.
Russia raised new demands, insisting NATO must avoid admitting Ukraine but also renounce a 2008 promise of future Ukrainian membership. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has insisted that NATO membership is the only way to ensure Ukraine’s security.
The talks, lasting over four hours, raised concerns among Ukraine and European leaders, fearing that U.S. President Donald Trump might strike a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin that could undermine their security interests and reward Russia’s aggression. Ukraine maintains that no peace deal can be made without its involvement.
