Israel launched extensive airstrikes across Syria as its forces advanced into a 400-square-kilometer buffer zone following the overthrow of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, AP News reports.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported over 300 Israeli airstrikes across Syria and claimed that Israeli forces had advanced within 25 km of Damascus. Israel said the strikes targeted Syria’s military assets and suspected chemical weapons to prevent them from falling into extremist hands, but denied advancing toward Damascus, stating that its forces remained within the buffer zone.
Israel’s actions have drawn condemnation from neighboring countries like Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, who accused Israel of exploiting Syria’s internal instability. The UN also called for both Israel and Syria to uphold the 1974 disengagement agreement.
