Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealth’s insurance unit, was fatally shot on Wednesday morning outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan in what police believe was a targeted attack, Reuters reports.
Surveillance footage shows the gunman, wearing a mask and carrying a gray backpack, waiting outside the hotel and specifically targeting Thompson, shooting him multiple times even after the gun jammed. The suspect fled on foot, later riding an electric bike into Central Park. Thompson was rushed to the hospital but died from his injuries. The gunman remains at large and the motive remains unclear.
The shooting occurred shortly before UnitedHealth’s annual investor conference, which was canceled following the incident. UnitedHealth described Thompson as a respected colleague and expressed condolences to his family.
