US President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he had pardoned his son Hunter Biden, who had pleaded guilty to tax violations and was convicted on firearms-related charges, Reuters reports.
Biden stated that while he had pledged not to interfere with the Justice Department’s decisions, he believed Hunter was unfairly prosecuted due to political motivations. He granted Hunter a full and unconditional pardon for offenses committed between January 1, 2014, and December 1, 2024. Hunter, who had struggled with addiction, expressed gratitude for the pardon and vowed to help others struggling with addiction.
Republicans, including President-elect Donald Trump, criticized the pardon, calling it an abuse of power. However, Biden defended his decision, claiming his son was unfairly targeted due to political motives and that such charges are rarely prosecuted in similar cases.
