Biden Approves Supplying Anti-Personnel Mines to Ukraine

US President Joe Biden has authorized the provision of anti-personnel landmines to Ukraine to help slow Russian advances, particularly in the eastern regions, Reuters reports.

The mines are designed to be “non-persistent” and deactivate after a set period, requiring a battery to detonate. Ukraine has committed to only deploy the mines within its own territory and avoid using them in civilian-populated areas.

This decision comes as Ukraine recently used US ATACMS missiles to strike Russian territory. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin lowered the threshold for a nuclear strike, warning that Western involvement, including missile supplies to Ukraine, could lead to direct conflict with NATO.
