Two undersea fiber-optic cables in the Baltic Sea, including one Finland-Germany cable and a Sweden-Lithuania cable, were severed, raising concerns about potential sabotage, Reuters reports.
The Finland-Germany cable, a 1,200 km cable between Helsinki and Rostock, failed early Monday, with repairs expected to take 5 to 15 days, according to Finnish state-controlled cyber security and telecoms company Cinia. Additionally, a 218-km Sweden-Lithuania cable went down on Sunday, according to Lithuania’s Telia Lietuva, part of Sweden’s Telia Company group.
Authorities in Finland, Germany, and Sweden are investigating the incidents, expressing concerns about potential intentional damage, amid heightened regional tensions, particularly with Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine.
This incident follows previous cases of damage to undersea infrastructure in the Baltic Sea, including last year’s damage to a gas pipeline and telecom cables, and the 2022 Nord Stream pipeline explosions, which are still under investigation.
