Brazilian police arrested five people on Tuesday for their alleged involvement in a coup attempt and plot to assassinate president-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and his vice president Geraldo Alckmin before they took office, Reuters reports.
The plot, called “Green and Yellow Dagger,” aimed to assassinate the two leaders on December 15, 2022, ahead of their inauguration in January 2023. Federal police carried out arrests and search warrants across four states and imposed restrictions on the suspects, including banning them from contacting each other or leaving the country. The suspects, mostly military personnel with Special Forces training, planned to establish an “Institutional Crisis Management Office” to manage the aftermath. They also intended to capture and kill a Supreme Court justice, though no names were disclosed.
The arrests come amid an ongoing investigation into former President Jair Bolsonaro’s alleged role in orchestrating the attempted coup following his electoral defeat.
