Musk’s giveaway involves $1 million checks for individuals who sign a petition supporting free speech and gun rights, limited to registered voters in key battleground states. Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner accuses Musk and his political action committee, America PAC, of running an illegal lottery scheme intended to influence voters. The lawsuit claims the giveaway violates consumer protection laws, lacks clear rules, and does not adequately protect personal information. Legal experts are also divided on whether the giveaway violates federal laws against paying for votes.
Musk is attempting to move the case to federal court, arguing that the lawsuit involves free speech and election interference issues. Musk had been ordered to appear, but his absence could lead to a fine if Judge Angelo Foglietta finds him in contempt.
Musk has contributed nearly $120 million to America PAC, which supports Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, with Trump expressing intent to appoint Musk to a government efficiency commission if elected.
