Canada Alleges Indian Minister Amit Shah Behind Plot Targeting Sikh Separatists

Canada has accused Indian Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah, a close ally of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, of orchestrating plots targeting Sikh separatists in Canada, Reuters reports.

Canadian Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister David Morrison informed a parliamentary panel that he had identified Shah to be behind the violence and intimidation campaigns targeting Sikh separatists, but did not provide further details or evidence. The Indian government has dismissed the allegations as baseless and has not publicly responded to the recent claims. Indian officials reportedly consider the evidence weak and do not anticipate repercussions for Shah.

Relations between Canada and India have been strained following the 2023 murder of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada, which led to the expulsion of diplomats between the two nations. Additionally, a former Indian intelligence officer has been charged in the US for allegedly attempting to murder another Sikh separatist leader in New York City, further complicating relations.
