US Vice President Kamala Harris expressed support for raising the federal minimum wage to at least $15 an hour, emphasizing her commitment to working-class voters amid a tight presidential race, Bloomberg reports.
Harris stated that she would push for this change in Congress in an interview with NBC News, which contrasts with former President Donald Trump’s recent reluctance to explicitly back a wage hike during a campaign event at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania. Harris criticized Trump for not endorsing an increase, asserting that hardworking Americans, regardless of their job, deserve a wage that allows them to support their families.
Both Harris and Trump are vying for working-class voters in key swing states, where the economy is a major issue. Voters are concerned about inflation, wages, and job growth, with polls indicating that many voters disapprove of the Biden administration’s economic record and tend to favor Trump on economic matters.
Harris has also pledged to eliminate subminimum wages, while both candidates have adopted the policy of eliminating taxes on tipped income.
