Israeli airstrikes have intensified in Lebanon, particularly targeting the port city of Tyre, where evacuation orders were issued for residents, Reuters reports.
The Israeli military reportedly killed three Hezbollah commanders and around 70 fighters in southern Lebanon in the past 48 hours. The strikes come after Israel confirmed the killing of Hashem Safieddine, the group’s heir apparent leader, in Beirut the day prior. Israel has also been conducting “limited, localized, targeted raids” against Hezbollah infrastructure in southern Lebanon, aiming to eliminate what it describes as terrorist operatives.
The strikes are part of Israel’s intensified military campaign against Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group, following weeks of conflict. The Lebanese government reports that Israeli actions have displaced at least 1.2 million people and caused over 2,530 deaths, including 63 in the past day.
