Billionaire Elon Musk pledged to give away $1 million each day until the upcoming November election to individuals who sign his online petition, raising concerns about the legality of these payments, Reuters reports.
The first prize was awarded at a political action committee (PAC) event supporting Donald Trump’s presidential campaign in Pennsylvania, where Musk presented a $1 million check to attendee John Dreher. Participants had to sign a petition supporting the First and Second Amendments, allowing America PAC to collect contact details for potential voters.
Musk founded America PAC to support Trump’s campaign, which aims to mobilize voters in battleground states. Musk, who has contributed at least $75 million to America PAC, has become a prominent supporter of Trump, who has indicated he would appoint Musk to lead a government efficiency commission if elected.
Musk’s payments have raised legal concerns and may violate federal laws prohibiting cash payments intended to influence voting behavior. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro called the move “deeply concerning” and suggested it may warrant legal enforcement scrutiny.
