The UN human rights office reported that over 100 medical and emergency workers have been killed in Lebanon since the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah began a year ago, Reuters reports.
The conflict, which followed Hezbollah’s support for Hamas at the start of the Gaza war, has escalated in recent weeks. Numerous Israeli airstrikes have targeted medical facilities and emergency responders, according to UN spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani. The World Health Organization noted that there have been 18 attacks on health facilities in Lebanon since September 17, resulting in the deaths of 72 health workers.
Israel claims its operations target Hezbollah’s military infrastructure while attempting to minimize civilian harm, accusing Hezbollah of hiding among civilians, a claim Hezbollah denies.
