Slovakia’s Fico Pledges to Prevent Ukraine’s NATO Bid While in Office

Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico strongly opposes Ukraine’s NATO membership, asserting he will not allow it while in office, warning it could trigger a third world war, Euronews reports.

Fico, a strong ally of Russia, advocates for resolving the conflict diplomatically rather than militarily. He declared that he would oppose Ukraine’s NATO membership during his term, warning that such an accession could lead to a third world war. He has also been critical of Western military and financial support for Ukraine, emphasizing that it exacerbates the conflict between Slavs.

Despite previously stating that Slovakia would not send ammunition to Ukraine, an investigation revealed that Fico’s government exported weapons worth at least €112 million to Ukraine.

Fico’s remarks came ahead of a meeting with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal to discuss energy security and infrastructure. He also plans to visit Moscow for the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, calling it a “peace rally.”
