The Southeastern US is undergoing a massive cleanup and recovery effort after Hurricane Helene caused widespread destruction, resulting in nearly 100 deaths and leaving 2.7 million people without power, Reuters reports.
The storm caused severe flooding, destroyed roads, bridges, and homes, and triggered storm surges. At least 90 people have been confirmed dead, with North Carolina reporting 30 deaths, South Carolina 25, Georgia 17, and Florida 11. Officials fear the toll will rise as hundreds remain unaccounted for due to downed communication systems. Damage estimates range between $15 billion and $100 billion, and recovery efforts are underway.
US President Joe Biden has declared major disasters in multiple states and pledged recovery assistance, with plans to visit the affected areas soon. Search and rescue teams from 19 states have been deployed across the region.
