Israel has reportedly killed Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah in a targeted airstrike on the group’s headquarters in Beirut, delivering a major blow to the Iran-backed group, Reuters reports.
The Israeli military confirmed the strike, which also claimed the lives of other senior Hezbollah commanders, including another top Hezbollah leader Ali Karaki. This marks a significant setback for Hezbollah and its ally Iran, as Nasrallah played a key role in building the group into a powerful force aligned with Tehran. Hezbollah vowed to continue its fight against Israel, asserting its support of Gaza and Lebanon. Israeli airstrikes intensified across Lebanon, while Hezbollah retaliated with rocket attacks on Israel.
Hezbollah has not yet announced a successor for Nasrallah, though Sayyed Hashem Safieddine is seen as a likely candidate. Israel stressed its war is with Hezbollah, not the Lebanese people. The conflict has displaced over 200,000 people in Lebanon, with fears escalating that the violence could draw in Iran and other regional powers.
